General Information:

It is the responsibility of the COPE Line Specialist to operate a telephone hotline. The COPE Line Specialist is to assist callers by providing appropriate information through hotline support services as well as referrals to other resources and services.  Operating the telephone hotlines, establishing rapport, greeting callers, and assessing the level of caller risk are under the responsibility of the COPE Line Specialist.  They must be able to provide active, positive and supportive listening to the callers. They will explore the caller’s emotional and mental state of mind by using comforting solution focused language. They must have a good knowledge of community resources.  They must be able to communicate intelligibly over the telephone and in person.  They must be able to handle various types of calls.  They must be able to manage well with individuals of different backgrounds.  They must be proficient in data entry, PC skills, and word processing.   

 



Minimum Training and Experience:

Qualifications include: Empathy for others, genuine desire and willingness to help people in need, openness to learning new skills, philosophies, ways of communication, and change.  They must have the desire to receive and give positive and constructive feedback before, during, and after training and throughout all experiences with COPE Line.  They must have a commitment to maintaining high levels of skills and performance, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.  They must be able to speak clearly and be easily understood over the telephone.  The COPE Line Specialist must be 21 years of age.  Lived experience or currently working in the mental health, substance field is preferred. They must display willingness to maintain high levels of skills and performance after training and the ability to accept supervision.



Special Requirements:

*Cope line Specialists areexpected to cover a minimum of 4 to 8 shifts a month. This can be a combinationof consecutive days or throughout the month.
