General Information:
Under general supervision, provides training, assistance, and direct care interventions to individuals served by the psychosocial program according to the Individual Service Plan for each individual.  Work involves the implementation of Individual Service Plans which enable individuals to participate in community lifestyles.  Employee is responsible for insuring the safety and security to individuals; providing transportation to and from assigned program locations and work sites; and day-support activity facilitation.  As a person with lived experience thriving with mental/emotional and/or substance use challenges, with a willingness to publically acknowledge and share their personal experiences, the Peer Counselor will promote greater independence, self-determination and community integration.  Through their mastery over the recovery process, the Peer Counselor will serve as a role model by representing each individual’s needs in the psychosocial program through the lens of lived experience.  Employee must exercise tact and courtesy in contact with staff, consumers, families, and service providers.  Employee is responsible for information gathering to be included in members’ progress notes. 

Minimum Training and Experience:

High School Diploma and 2 to 4 months’ experience providing direct care or personal assistance to disabled persons preferably in a human services program environment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Special Requirements:

Must possess a valid Virginia Driver's License and driving record acceptable to agency insurance carrier. Must possess CPR, First Aid, Medication Management, and Medicaid Waiver Certifications.  Must be certified tuberculosis free on an annual basis as required by licensing authority.
